Questions from the bathroom shelf

Sort out conflicting advice

Start with the decision you need to make. These answers explain the limits as well as the useful next step.

Can oily skin still feel dry or tight?

Yes. Surface oil and water balance are not the same thing. Tightness may follow harsh washing or irritation; it is not a diagnosis. A comfortable, lighter moisturiser may be useful even if your skin looks shiny.

Understand water loss and the barrier
Should I stop all active ingredients in winter?

Not automatically. Review optional irritating products if skin becomes sore, and ask your prescriber before changing prescribed treatment. A comfortable routine does not need a seasonal overhaul simply because the calendar changed.

Why does moisturiser sting?

Irritated skin or an ingredient may be responsible. Stinging does not prove a product is working. Stop a repeatedly uncomfortable product and seek advice for persistent symptoms. Severe swelling or breathing difficulty after a product needs emergency help.

Does drinking extra water fix dry skin?

Normal hydration supports health, but extra water is not a substitute for addressing excessive water loss at the skin surface. Review washing habits and moisturiser rather than forcing large amounts of water. Follow medical advice if you have fluid restrictions.

Is a humidifier worth trying?

It may help when indoor air is dry. Measure humidity, avoid condensation and clean the device according to its instructions. The US Environmental Protection Agency generally recommends an indoor relative humidity of 30 to 50 percent. More is not always better.

Are fatty alcohols the same as ethanol?

No. Cetyl and cetearyl alcohol are fatty alcohols commonly used to soften skin and support cream structure. An ingredient name containing “alcohol” is not enough to predict how a product will feel.

Read ingredient names in context
Do I need sunscreen when it is cold?

Temperature does not measure UV exposure. Consider the UV Index, snow, altitude and time outdoors, using clothing and suitable sunscreen. For exposed skin, broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher is a useful starting point; follow its directions.

Can plain lip balm replace SPF lip protection?

No. A balm without an SPF claim is not sunscreen. Use labelled broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher lip protection outdoors and reapply as directed, particularly after eating or drinking.

Plan winter lip and sun care
How long does a skin barrier take to recover?

There is no universal countdown. The cause, severity and ongoing exposure matter. Persistent or worsening symptoms need professional assessment. Avoid repeatedly adding products in an attempt to meet a promised recovery deadline.

When should I ask a clinician rather than change products?

Seek advice for persistent cracking, bleeding, significant itch or a recurring rash. Spreading redness, warmth, swelling, pus or increasing pain warrant prompt assessment. Website guidance cannot determine whether you have eczema, an allergy or an infection.
